It's no secret that fast fashion is extremely detrimental to our environment — we already know all about the mass amount of textile waste, carbon emissions, and resource usage in the industry. After watching a few too many Shein hauls on TikTok, it's clear that overconsumption is harming our planet.
But here’s what people aren’t talking about enough: The human cost of fast fashion. Have you ever wondered why some of these brands are able to sell clothes at such a low price? Let’s just say that these companies aren’t exactly taking any hits for their affordability. And we get what we pay for.
Many employees that work for these fast fashion companies don’t make a livable wage. In fact, workers at fast fashion companies such as Shein make as little as 4 cents per item and don’t receive a base salary, according to Business Insider.
At a different Shein factory, the yearly pay is 4,000 yuan, which is about $556, but that’s if they make at least 500 clothing items per day — this often requires extremely long work hours. Many employees work 18-hour days, leaving barely enough time to rest and complete basic tasks for themselves. Weekends aren’t a thing either; they only get one day off each month. On top of that, workers are faced with a hefty fine if they make even one mistake. A single misstep can cost them as much as two-thirds of their daily wages.
The circumstances for garment workers in the U.S. aren’t much better. The U.S. Department of Labor investigated the industry in 2022 and found that 80 percent of contractors were breaching overtime and minimum wage laws. One of the contractors was even paying employees $1.58 per hour, despite the minimum wage being $15. And remember, this is in the United States!
Many workers face hazardous labor conditions in addition to unlivable wages. Fashion Revolution — an organization dedicated to putting an end to exploitation in the fashion industry — uncovered just how dangerous these factories are. For example, in 2020, a large fire broke out at Nandan Denim, which is a factory in Ahmedabad, India. The event claimed seven lives and brought to light just how unacceptable the work conditions are in these factories. Not only did the floor have only a single door for entering and exiting, but it could only be reached by climbing a tall ladder. Further investigation revealed that there also wasn’t proper ventilation, fire escapes, or emergency apparatus. There wasn’t even an alarm system. Unfortunately, these conditions aren’t unusual in the garment industry. Unlivable wages and deadly work environments are the high cost of fast fashion.
The fashion industry is a large generator of carbon emissions, according to the Princeton Student Climate Initiative. This pollution causes global warming, which leads to a plethora of other issues like increasing ocean temperatures and rising sea levels. As our oceans become warmer, severe storms are becoming more and more frequent, NASA explained. And with sea levels rising, the storm surges from these severe events are just going to get worse. All of this is to say, the environmental impacts of fast fashion create consequences for people as well.
Avoiding fast fashion can be difficult especially when you're on a budget, but it’s certainly not impossible. We can do plenty of things to decrease our consumption and impact.
While browsing, try to focus on finding items you could see yourself wearing for years to come. Try to find some solid wardrobe essentials to rely on. Of course, getting some fun pieces on the trendier side is fine, too, especially when they’re already at the thrift store.
At the end of the day, all we can do is try our best, whether that looks like shopping at your favorite secondhand store or buying from a high quality sustainable clothing brand. It’s important to recognize the consequences of fast fashion and make an effort to support alternatives.
]]>First, it's important to note why this post seems necessary. Since beginning this brand and various deep dives into the many facets of sustainable & ethical fashion, there are several terms that get used a lot. Some are used by big brands to greenwash their marketing in order to seem more ethical than they actually are. And other terms are thoughtful and actually useful to the everyday fashion consumer. Terms like slow fashion and living wages have real meaning behind them when referring to the way garments are produced and the treatment of the workers who make them. Another is this concept of having a capsule wardrobe.
Simply put, a capsule wardrobe is a collection of clothing composed of thoughtfully curated, easily interchangeable items designed to maximize the number of outfits that you can create. Essentially, this simple, minimalistic way of putting together your wardrobe allows you to create a variety of different looks with a small selection of clothes.
The term capsule wardrobe dates back to the 1970s and came from Susie Faux, the owner of a London boutique called Wardrobe. According to Faux, a capsule wardrobe contains a few essential and timeless items, such as skirts and pants, that you can supplement with seasonal pieces.
The concept took off in 1985 with designer Donna Karan’s first capsule collection called “Seven Easy Pieces.” The collection included a bodysuit, skirt, tailored jacket, dress, something leather, a white shirt, and a cashmere sweater and was designed to take a woman from a day in the office to an evening out.
Today, capsule wardrobes seem to be having something of a revival largely due to an increase in public interest in reducing the fashion industry’s environmental impact and greater demand for brands with sustainable and responsible manufacturing processes.
Let's start with the benefits...and there are several!
Okay, so now for the cons. Critics of the capsule wardrobe might argue that it takes the fun out of fashion and removes one's personal style from the equation. Often the formula to create a capsule wardrobe is to use neutral colors and basic pieces. But if a capsule wardrobe is working correctly for you, there really doesn't need to be any downside. And there doesn't need to be one black and white way to look at it...there are no hard and fast rules here. It's okay and absolutely necessary to find your own style and express who you are through your own capsule wardrobe. Adding color and prints are great ways to personalize yours and keeps it looking like you. You should try to use what you already have and just add in the pieces you might be missing.
The key really is to keep the number of items in your closet low and to make sure that most, if not all of them can work together to create multiple looks. Try to keep it timeless and use high quality pieces that will last for years. Also, accessories go a long way in styling your everyday looks...so play and have fun with it!
This brand was created for just this reason! So you can find quality, effortless pieces that are not only ethically produced, but that you can easily add in to your own capsule wardrobe and make getting dressed simple and uncomplicated. Plus we add a little edge to each piece to help you express your sexy, cool self!
Pieces like our Patti Short Sleeve Tee and our Pima Rib Knit L&L Tank are classic wardrobe essentials you can use to build out your own capsule wardrobe. Our Pima Rib Knit L&L Racerback Dress is another timeless style that can be worn in multiple outfits to created a variety of looks, day or night. It also styles perfectly with our Lana Sweatshirt Tunic, a more fun, edgy piece to add in to your own capsule.
Enjoy and remember to be mindful and stay true to you!

Slow fashion doesn’t equal lazy. It’s actually a revolutionary way to approach fashion in this current age. It uses an activist mindset and approaches fashion using a combination of old methods and new, thoughtful practices. It’s an ethics first, profits last model. And it takes a lot of work to move this slow fashion movement forward.

No matter how hard you try to pin down your numerical size, you just can’t seem to find one number that fits across the board. You’re one size at one retailer, then two sizes smaller at another. Not only is this frustrating from a shopping standpoint, but it can take a toll on your mental health and self-confidence. Sound familiar?
Studies have shown that clothing size is a factor women consider in regard to accepting their bodies, proving that self-worth and numerical sizing are unfortunately linked. Additionally, requiring a larger option than expected not only reduces self-esteem but also creates an overall negative attitude toward clothing.
The problem is not, and never will be, your body. The fashion industry is notorious for glorifying thin, tall body types, but it’s also infamous for creating sizing systems that aren’t consistent. In fact, there isn’t a universal sizing standard that brands follow across the industry and there isn't a requirement for size standardization across apparel brands. All of this is to say that if a sizing system at a store doesn’t seem to make sense, it’s probably because it doesn’t. Nothing is wrong with your leg because a pair of jeans hugs your thighs but won’t button. Your arms aren’t too short and too wide at the same time. Unfortunately, we can say this to ourselves endlessly but that doesn’t fix the fact that we have to put clothing on our body, and when you’re constantly faced with a flawed system, it’s hard not to blame the person staring back at you in the mirror. Experiences like these aren’t just the cause of fleeting frustration, they can also change how you perceive yourself.
At LOVETRUST we are constantly analyzing the fit of our garments and our size standards. We know first-hand how hard it can be to buy something we think will fit in the size we normally wear only to find it's too tight. And that's not to say that we have it down to a flawless science. But we are always working to get the best fit possible through testing, perfecting and testing again. This work starts in the design process and continues with the feedback we get from you. If something doesn't fit properly, we want to know. We want to understand how you feel in each style we create. If it's not working, we want to fix it!
We also think it's important as a community to talk about these things. To normalize all the different shapes and sizes our bodies come in. Not to strive to look one way or maintain specific measurements, but to love the complexity and diversity of our own individuality. Your size doesn't matter but how you feel about yourself does. You should choose the clothing that feels best on your body, and we want to be able to provide those quality, classic pieces to you.
]]>As a responsible, slow-fashion brand, we have a lot of options to weigh. From the fiber content of our garments to the factories we choose to make them. Even the packaging we use to ship your orders in can be a complex choice. Do we use recycled materials that can also be recycled or do we choose a more innovative bio-material that has been developed to break down over time? As with everything else in this nuanced space, the right answer is not always that straightforward. In short...it's complicated.
As some of you may have already noticed, we are beginning to phase out of our compostable mailers from our current supplier, NoIssue. We have decided to replace them with 100% recycled and recyclable kraft paper mailers made by EcoEnclose — another great, sustainable packaging supplier that is highly regarded within the industry. Why have we decide to do this you may be asking?
As with many choices we have to make, there are pros and cons to both. We originally opted to use compostable mailers for several reasons including that no matter how you dispose of them, they would break down over time. And that's true, but as their popularity grows, more has come to light about bioplastics — otherwise known as compostable "poly", or plastic-like materials made from renewable sources such as corn. While they are compostable when disposed of correctly, they don't tend to break down as effectively when in a landfill and have been proven to release small amounts of methane into the air. Additionally, many municipal compost facilities discourage their use as they can clog the sorting and mixing machinery. We still believe that compostable bioplastics are a far better option than traditional plastic or polyurethane but until advances can be made to make them more eco-friendly and efficient, we have decided to switch to a more tried and true material. Recycled kraft paper not only uses sustainable production and contents but also can be recycled for a truly circular lifecycle. What's more is they are naturally biodegradable. All of this gives us peace of mind that our decision to switch to circular kraft paper mailers a responsible one.
Look out for our new recycled kraft mailers with your next order and know we are making every effort to keep your purchases safe and protected in the most sustainable ways we can. As we learn, we grow and move toward a more responsible future. Thank you for coming along for the journey!
]]>My name is Melissa, I’m the founder of LOVETRUST, and I thought it was about time I shared more of my story. You may already know my name, but I don’t often share much about my personal life or where I started. Because to know that, is to know LOVETRUST, and if you’re anything like me, you want to know the who and the why behind the brands you follow and buy from.
First and foremost, I am a mom with two wild and loveable boys, Miles and Otis. When I’m not running the day to day of the brand or living mom-life, which is almost never, I love to go birding, listen to all types of music and podcasts, and maybe find some time to myself to read. I also love my friends and take any chance I can to grab a drink or head to the park with them…my friends have always made my life feel whole and are like family to me.
I am originally from Bellingham, Washington, a fact I am very proud of. There’s just something about being from the very top corner of the Pacific Northwest that sticks with you. The PNW is special place (IYKYK). I knew in high school that I wanted to be a fashion designer so during my senior year I applied and was accepted to FIDM in San Francisco. Although I feel like a nature kid at heart, I absolutely love living in the city! San Francisco really fueled my creativity and brought this shy kid out of her shell. I met so many amazing friends there and became a lot more social and aware of the world around me.
Ultimately my ambitions (and maybe a guy…who’s now my husband) brought me to New York City where I live in Brooklyn and feel a deep sense of belonging. In New York City I was really able to grow in my career. I eventually became the Design Director for a fast-paced, mass market apparel company where I oversaw 7 different labels. It was a lot. I still loved it and working there taught me a lot, including that I really did want to start my own line one day. I wanted to use my skills for my own brand, to have the freedom and independence to live on my own terms. The fashion industry can be pretty brutal and it’s easy to burn out from the long hours and daily criticism (something that’s common for women in most creative careers).
In 2014 I became a mom for the first time and despite loving my career, I just couldn’t balance it all. For us moms, having it all is a myth. After a year and half of working 10-hour days and then rushing home on the subway only to put my baby to bed, I knew I had to sacrifice my work for the time being. I wanted to experience being a mother and see all the little milestones my son was experiencing. So, I took a leap with the support of my husband and decided to be a stay-at-home mom for a time. Then came my second son and life truly was different. My body had changed, my priorities definitely changed and I felt like a completely different person…not necessarily in a good or bad way. My lifestyle and sense of self just looked so far away from who I thought I was. But I was still me…and I still loved fashion and being a designer. I knew I had to somehow get back to the middle. Not back to my 20 something self…just somewhere that felt more comfortable and familiar. I started working again and while I was designing, once again for other people, I knew I needed to finally start my own thing.
I also knew how important it was to me that whatever my endeavor was, it must be sustainable and mindfully produced. I have witnessed (and unfortunately been a part of) the extremely wasteful practices in fashion. Use of plastics disguised as pretty fabrics, mass production, even tons of waste at the development phase…it was so gross to me. I couldn’t start another clothing brand that was continuing this profit first, planet last way of doing business. Plus, I always had so much compassion and love for the women who work on the production lines and in the sample rooms. The aunties, mothers and grandmothers who are incredibly talented and often overlooked in fashion. They are skilled technicians and artisans performing a craft that is becoming a lost art. Garment making is skilled labor, something we need to appreciate more. I always thought they were the heart of fashion but unfortunately are often underpaid and overworked. It’s a terrible truth that I wanted to help change.
With that, I quit my job and started LOVETRUST. A sustainably and thoughtfully made clothing brand for women like me. Moms. Fashionistas who love comfort over everything else. Women who want a little edge or sexiness from their everyday t-shirt (but make it organic!) Women who need function and effortless style from their wardrobe so they can go to the playground with their kids, then to brunch with their girlfriends. Sometimes we want a pop of color, sometimes we want to wear all black — but we always want to look and feel confident, comfortable, and cool. And we want to leave a better world for our kids. And as a mother, I know you know that feels like an overwhelming and unattainable task these days. But we can still try.
So I’ll be over here in my little corner of fashion trying to do my part, bringing you along for the ride. It may be bumpy, and sometimes beautiful but you can bet we’ll have on a great playlist while wearing cool (comfortable) style!

First, it's important to know what the word "sustainable" means. In short, it means that something is "able to be maintained at a certain rate or level" or fulfilling the needs of current generations without compromising the needs of future generations, while ensuring a balance between economic growth, environmental care and social well-being. Lately the term is thrown around a lot and is over used in marketing and at times is used to push products that are not worthy of the label. We use it here as a general term to include ethical and all around responsible practices in regards to fashion and clothing production. And we don't take the term lightly.
As we move into a new era of eco-friendly living, the need for sustainably made clothing is more pressing than ever. With fashion seeming to move towards responsible consumption and recycling, it’s important to know what to look for when shopping for sustainable clothing in 2023. In this article, we will explore the steps you can take to find the best ethical and sustainable clothing to add to your wardrobe when you need to. From conscious consumer buying tips to understanding certifications, you’ll gain a little more knowledge to invest in ethical and sustainable fashion pieces that are good for both people and planet.
There are many types of sustainable fabrics that can be used to make clothing. Some of the most sustainable fabrics include organic cotton, bamboo, wool, and hemp. Each of these fabrics has unique qualities that make it a good choice for sustainable clothing. And since all three are natural and plant-based, they can be broken down over time so their end of life impact is low.
When it comes to caring for your clothing, there are a few things you can do to ensure that they will last longer and have a smaller impact on the environment. Here are a few tips:
Sustainable fashion is important for a number of reasons. First, it is important for the environment. Truly sustainable fashion takes into account the entire lifecycle of a garment, from the sourcing of materials to its end-of-life disposal. This means that sustainable fashion considers the environmental impact at each step in the production process and works to minimize that impact.
Second, sustainability and ethics are important to the people who make our clothing. Sustainable fashion brands typically work with Fair Trade-certified factories and pay their workers a living wage. This ensures that the workers who make our clothing are treated fairly and paid fairly for their work.
Finally, sustainable fashion is also important for the consumer. When you buy sustainable fashion, you can be confident that you are buying clothing that was made in an ethical and environmentally responsible way. And, because sustainable fashion brands typically use higher quality materials and construction methods, your clothing will likely last longer, meaning you'll save money and peace of mind.
This is why ethics and sustainability are so important at LOVETRUST. We take every measure to consider the entire lifecycle of a garment – from the sourcing of materials to the working conditions of those who produce it, to the end-of-life disposal of the product. It also means creating clothing that is made to last, so you can wear it for years and years without having to replace it. And finally, it means making sure our prices are fair and accessible. We believe that sustainable clothing can be both affordable and fun. High quality and wearability are important factors when choosing clothing, and we take these into consideration when creating our pieces. Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do, and we think that’s something worth supporting.
With more people becoming aware of the damage done by fast fashion, now is the time to make conscious purchasing decisions that prioritize sustainability and ethical production. By understanding what materials are sustainable and researching where your clothes come from, you can ensure that you are making responsible purchases while also looking stylish!
]]>First it’s important to define this term – Sustainable Living. Well, simply put, it’s practicing a lifestyle that attempts to reduce personal and societal use of the Earth’s natural resources. It’s all about making responsible and mindful decisions as a consumer that impact positive change for our planet and its people. So here are some of the best resources we've found to help you with your own sustainable living education.
Formally This Organic Girl, The New Knew is a great resource for all things sustainable but especially when it comes to beauty and hair tips, tricks and products. Founded by Lisa Fennessy, this blog is a great resource for well-researched info about clean beauty, healthy living and going grey. It’s truly one of our favorites! Learn more about The New Knew here.
There are honestly not that many truly responsible and thorough blogs or publications devoted purely to sustainable fashion, but we think we’ve found the best.
Top on the short list is Sustainably Chic, the ultimate online destination for all things sustainable and ethical fashion (and beauty!). The founder, Natalie Kay Costello, has an extensive background in fashion herself so she knows the change necessary to move fashion toward a more responsible future. Next, and one we’ve been reading for a long time now, is EcoCult. This blog takes a more scientific approach to researching and informing about the fashion industry. Founded by Alden Wicker, EcoCult is a favorite among fashion insiders and responsible consumers alike. Learn more about EcoCult here.
Lastly, we want to give an honorable mention to one of our favorite Instagram accounts, @Secondhand.Sustainability. The founder, Brooke Bowlin, doesn’t currently have a blog devoted just to Secondhand Sustainability but she offers really helpful and nuanced information through this account and also in her newsletter, Nuance Required. Check out @Secondhand.Sustainability on Insta here.
Why are we including a vegan blog on our list? Well, for one thing, fair treatment of animals is an important cause at LOVETRUST. Not to mention that the meat and dairy industries are huge contributors to climate change with livestock accounting for around 15% of the world’s greenhouse gases each year. But that’s a blog topic for another day. The fashion industry is also a big, and at times forgotten, culprit in the unfair treatment of animals. As a brand, we’ve made a pledge to never use fur or leather in our products because we want to be a part of the change, not the problem. This is why we want to share vegan resources. Veganism is not just about eating healthier. On an ethical level, it’s important to us to give you the resources to learn more so you can make your own choices, whether that’s to become vegan yourself or to just make more responsible choices as a consumer.
So with that, our favorite vegan living resource is World of Vegan. This blog has a ton of tips and articles about how to live a vegan lifestyle. From vegan recipes to vegan pregnancy guides to the best vegan shoes, you are sure to find whatever cruelty-free information you're looking for on World of Vegan. Learn more about World of Vegan here.

]]>The holidays are upon us and that means it's time to start thinking about what you're going to wear to all those holiday parties and get-togethers. If you're looking for something more elevated than your usual go-to outfit, we can help get you in a festive mood! In this special holiday blog post, we'll guide you through putting together the perfect holiday outfit, complete with all the joyful trimmings. Whether you're going for sophisticated style or something a little more fun, we've got you covered. So read on and get inspired!
The colors you choose for your holiday outfit can say a lot about your personal style. Do you prefer a more traditional look, or are you drawn to contemporary colors? Here are some tips to help you choose the perfect colors for your office party, family dinner or New Year’s celebration ensemble:
Any look is elevated by the perfect accessories. And this year our favorite must-have accessory is the mile high boot. Slouchy or fitted, heeled or flat — the further up the leg, the better! Make it holiday-ready with patent black shine or glam gold metallic. We love to pair them with extra short hems and leggings for some added warmth on cold nights.
If your style is more subtle, maybe opt for an embellished clutch or add some charm on your wrist with layered bangles or pearl tennis bracelets. Jewelry is always a great way to add some sparkle and shine to your holiday style.
Another aesthetic we love is high-low dressing. This means creating a complete look that combines luxe and casual pieces. Try pairing a lace or satin skirt with a cool, oversized sweatshirt. It’s all about mixing the fancy with the everyday, posh with sporty, glitzy with classic, voluminous ruffles with tailored menswear…you get the drift.
In addition to flawless accessories and chic style, fit is key to a great look. A well-fitting pair of pants or a curve hugging dress in a rich fabric will set the tone for your outfit and make you feel pulled together from the get-go. The importance of looking polished, confident, and authentically you cannot be understated — especially when dressing for the office party or dinner with the in-laws. And this means also being comfortable. The proper fit is the best way to ensure you look and feel great! And when in doubt use the “less is more” rule.
When it comes to finding the perfect holiday outfit, there are a couple things you'll want to take into consideration. First, what is the dress code? Is it formal or casual? If it's formal, you'll want to make sure you're wearing something that is appropriate for the occasion. A sophisticated dress or pencil skirt look is always appropriate for a more formal affair. If the dress code is casual, then you have a little more flexibility in what you can wear. Try pairing on trend wide leg pants with a classic button down or with an unexpected tunic on top.
And of course, you'll want to consider your own personal style when putting together any outfit. After all, this is a time when you can really dress up and have some fun! Build an outfit that makes you feel confident and comfortable - one that will let your personality shine through.
